Become a Certified Western Riding Instructor?
19.February, 2009
Hi. Im a freshman in highschool and i've been involved in horses for 5 years in western riding. I own a show horse and have lots of experience in both showing and riding. My trainer has pretty much inspired me to teach riding to people. I was just wondering how i become a certified instructor? and what specific courses in highschool should i take?
I have been recomended Olds College in Albreta
thanks in advance

Im not too sure if you can become certified as a highschool student.. As far as i know you have to go through schooling, training and pay some amounts of money to be certified.. At least here you do and everywhere i know in the Us that has tons of horsey areas…

You have to be out of high school and I believe 18 to be considered for Equine schooling. If your high school will offer courses for that then take something. But there are many schools arcoss the US that offer the certification you want. But it costs money! I went to the school in Texas. There are a few. Use google.com to find something near you

FOr your high school classes, I would take speech class and public speaking. Speech classes will help you learn to project your voice, how to make lesson points easy and memorable and will teach you how to outline your lesson plans. I would also take psychology classes so that you know how to motivate people and how to handle people when they are scared or angry. I would also take anatomy and pysiology. I cant tell you how many times I have read a How to ride book that tells you to move a certain way and the joint in question cant move the way the book wants it to move. I would also take some business classes. The business classes will tell you how to advertise, how to do accounts payable and receiveable and how to budget your money.
For certification, CHA and ARICP are good certification programs. You could also go to college for horse training and instructor cert.
I went to U of Findlay in Findlay Ohio, USA and I got certified by ARICP and CHA.

Hi Im from Red Deer, Alberta which is about 1 hr away from olds college and I have thought about going there also so I have done some research about them and lots of my family and friend have gone to olds college. You have to be a minimum age of 18 and have a high school diploma. Olds college is a really great college they offer lots of courses on equine coaching and certification, dentistry, reproduction, and farrier. I would suggest it for you if you want to become a certified instructor. Good luck
