What do the different "levels" of dressage mean?
21.February, 2009
I am curious as to what the difference is among 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level dressage? Are there any more than 4 levels?
Here is a link that tells you which movements are involved in each level (US and Dutch equivalents):

This link explains each level (US site):

Charts and nice organized websites are easier to read than anything I could attempt to explain!

There are various difficulties in movements and performances in each level. There are "airs above ground", which are extremely advanced moves that include levade, and (i think) capriole, the trademarks of the Lippizan Stallions. I couldn't tell you all of the moves in each level, but each level gets increasingly harder and requires more flexibility, agility, and muscular build.

the different levels get harder as you move up. you can stay on the same level your whole life, but once someone does really well on the first level, they move up. i have been on the first level for a while because it is good practice. good luck!
