How old is the average person on Horses-Answers? A thread came up…about a cross the U.S., country ride…?

No, I don't want to know you ages, but if you are anywhere near my age, that ride was made back in the seventies. A man did it in about 8 months as I recall….
So, did anyone read the magazine article about him? Can anyone find an archive about it? I think it was in Horse & rider.
He went through terrible hardships with his horses. He had huge abcesses on his horses' backs by the time he got to Colorado, I think, he started with horses and had to change. I think he ended up with a pack MULE and one or two tough little horses that finished the trip.
The Long Riders Guild, WOW, interesting site. Never realized there were so many that have made such fabulous treks. I was referring to a magazine covered trip by John Egenes from Ventura, CA to Virginia Beach, VA on "Gizmo" a QH. A yea later Allen Russell rode from Flathead River, CA to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico on "Kono" another QH…these were both in mags back when I was a kid…but the others in the LRG are amazing, especially, of course, the women!!! We are tougher than we look…. ;D
That was Flathead river, CANADA not Cali.
I read about Len Brown, amazing story also…from the 1970's, but John E. was the guy I read about….
I'm giving best answer to the source link of the LRG. Excellent reading!!!!
This the only person that comes to mind. Gene Glasscock. But I think his riding was done in the late 90's, early 2000's. I know he had quite a few mishaps along the way also.

There was a lady within the past two-three years that traveled from South America up through North America along the mountain ranges that make up the Andes and Rocky Mountains. There was an article in Horse Illustrated or Equus about it. I don't remember her name, but she went through three horses I think.
And I thought there was a cross country endurance ride around the countries 200th birthday. In fact I thought that is where the rubber slip on shoe first made an appearance.
It has been done before, and it sounds like a great adventure - but one full of hardship for both horse and rider.

Try Len Brown… I didn't have time to elaborate the other day…anyway, he rode cross country back in the seventies, had serious issues with the backs of his horses, switched to mules. Then developed a saddle to address these issues of saddle fit that sored his horse's backs. Back in the early eighties this line cost upwards of fifteen hundred to two thousand dollars each. English and Western makes, plus Outback and Pack. They had floating panels and a special type of tree. He went on the road giving saddle fitting clinics, with the intent of selling his product, but also imparted a good deal of sound knowledge in general, sold special shims to help make the average saddle fit better. We met him at a clinic he gave and I got to "test drive" my dream saddle. Like riding in a Mercedes…just smooth as silk. He has been written up in many publications, both the saddle biz and his ride. I think he is based in either Tennessee or Kentucky. He is now promoting a special kind of saddle pad that is exotic looking to say the least, but is supposed to make any saddle fit the horse so well it is pressure free. I never got one of his saddles, being always just out of reach financially.
