Who would you rather ride cross-country with?

Gary Busey or Danny Bonaduce?? Why does one scare you less than the other?
Gary Busey, but I'm bringing a helmet — and a taser.
How old is the average person on Horses-Answers? A thread came up…about a cross the U.S., country ride…?

No, I don't want to know you ages, but if you are anywhere near my age, that ride was made back in the seventies. A man did it in about 8 months as I recall….
So, did anyone read the magazine article about him? Can anyone find an archive about it? I think it was in Horse & rider.
He went through terrible hardships with his horses. He had huge abcesses on his horses' backs by the time he got to Colorado, I think, he started with horses and had to change. I think he ended up with a pack MULE and one or two tough little horses that finished the trip.
The Long Riders Guild, WOW, interesting site. Never realized there were so many that have made such fabulous treks. I was referring to a magazine covered trip by John Egenes from Ventura, CA to Virginia Beach, VA on "Gizmo" a QH. A yea later Allen Russell rode from Flathead River, CA to Ciudad Juarez, Mexico on "Kono" another QH…these were both in mags back when I was a kid…but the others in the LRG are amazing, especially, of course, the women!!! We are tougher than we look…. ;D
That was Flathead river, CANADA not Cali.
I read about Len Brown, amazing story also…from the 1970's, but John E. was the guy I read about….
I'm giving best answer to the source link of the LRG. Excellent reading!!!!
This the only person that comes to mind. Gene Glasscock. But I think his riding was done in the late 90's, early 2000's. I know he had quite a few mishaps along the way also.

help with an entry form for cross country riding?
21.February, 2009
i am new to cross country riding, what does this form mean?
http://www.storybooksporthorses.com/Downloads/SBShow%20Form-Fill%20in.pdf
tell me what the costs are, i dont own any thing, not even a horse.
THANKS!
the top is self explanatory. Next, what is your riding level? green means you have never been trained, Novice is beginner, and so on. The next part wants to know what you want and how much it cost. Are you doing the schooling day? if so do you need a vest? You can ask for help from the officials to fill out the form. Equestrian sport is very expensive. Good luck.
Poll? When I turn 61 should I go for that cross country motorcycle ride?

Depends. Are you driving or behind some sweaty PA boy? Forget Sturgis. Are you winding through the beautiful Ozark Mountains? Do you have room for a Pilgrim? Huhhhhhh? : )
Cross Country / Eventing? ?
17.February, 2009
I ride English and I’m switching my focus from show jumping to cross country. I have a few questions. First, for those of you who ride cross country, can you tell me how it is? I do english pleasure, but I’m going to do Xcountry when I get better.
2. How many jumps are there typically per course? Or can you give me a range? How high are these jumps?
3. For those of you who do eventing, can you tell me which you enjoy more and why, Xcountry or show jumping?
4. Also I looked on the FEI website, and it’s kind of surprising. Their disciplines are Youth, paralympic, vaulting, reining (did they just add that?), driving, endurance, eventing, dressage, and jumping. So how come, if eventing is dressage, jumping, AND Xcountry, are jumping and dressage FEI sports but Xcountry isn’t?! In the Olympics, you can compete in Dressage, Jumping, and Eventing, but not Cross country. Why?
5. When I start riding Cross Country, I need a body protector (vest), correct? How high should I be jumping before I buy the vest? I currently jump 2′6″. I’m 5′ and 85 pounds, so I would probably need a youth. Any good youth vests out there?
6. Any tips? I appreciate all tips and I will be selecting a best answer! Thanks!
Let me start by saying that Cross Country is not an individual sport, it’s one phase of Eventing. Cross Country will never be an individual event because to excel at it, you need to have the dressage background. There are already horrific casualties and injuries on the cross country course because riders are unprepared for the demands. These fatalities would only increase if the riders no longer had to meet dressage requirements (thus demonstrating their control and precision).
1) I’m a show jumper now, but I have a background in eventing. The cross country phase is fun and a rush, but honestly I don’t have the courage for it anymore. I had a few hairy moments, and those fences don’t come down. I switched back to the hunter/jumper circuit and never looked back after seeing a good friend severely injured on course.
2) The number of jumps and the height of them depends on what level you’re showing (Training, Preliminary, Novice, etc.)
3) As stated before, I liked the stadium phase better and went back to my hunter/jumper roots after a stint in the eventing world. The jumps fall down if you hit them, and the chance for injury or death is smaller.
4) Yes, reining is fairly new to the FEI. It’s hugely popular in Canada and Italy, oddly enough. I said before, Cross Country is one phase in Eventing. It will never be an individual event because of safety concerns. The three Olympic equestrian events are Dressage, Eventing (which is comprised of dressage, cross country, and show jumping), and Show Jumping.
5) Yes, you will need a vest. I had a custom vest when I rode eventing, and that’s the best way to get the correct fit. A tack store can take your measurements and order you the vest.
6) Work with a trainer. Always wear a helmet and a vest when schooling cross country. And start by schooling jumps in the field that are 6″ or more below what you school in the ring.
What is a good bike that I can ride cross country and downhill that is pretty light? I am only 13.?
15.February, 2009
Well depends on how much you want to spend.
Cheap, lite, durable choose only 2
Cheap and lite = not durable
Lite and dutiable = not cheap
Cheap and durable = not lite
Cross country (XC) and Downhill (DH) are opposites.
A XC bike will go downhill but will fall apart soon as most are built to go up hill fast and are built lite and not as strong as a DH bike.
A DH bike will go cross country but it would not be much fun as its heavy and you will be left behind by your pals on XC bikes.
Why do you rub alcohol on a horses legs after you ride cross country? ?
13.February, 2009
What does it do, and how does it do that?
Thanks
Alcohol evaporates rapidly Evaporation on the skin surface is one of the effective mechanisms for cooling the blood circulating beneath the surface. In humans, rubbing alcohol can be mixed in water and used to sponge skin to speed up evaporation which speeds up cooling of peripheral blood, and helps to reduce fever. As blood passes through the vessels of the skin, it can be cooled. Cold hosing is one way of cooling the blood as it circulates through skin. Alcohol rubs on the body surface speed cooling of the horse by enhancing evaporation of sweat, or just by evaporation of the alcohol itself.
The only reason for using alcohol on the legs is for evaporation and cooling.
what are the chances of getting a cross country part of full ride to a D-2 or D-1 college?
11.February, 2009
I am a Sophomore in high school and my fastest 5k is a 17:28. This summer I am running up to 600 miles and I know I can improve a lot come my Junior year. however i was wondering if I am on pace to do get some sort of ride, maybe D-2 rather that D-3. Any comments?
If you decrease your time by about 40-50 seconds you have a good chance of getting a part scholarship to D-2 school.
I knew a guy who ran it in 16 flat and got a partial scholarship t a Pac 10 school so keep up the good times

I have recently just got back into riding and i am looking to compete again. But need to know what is the correct color jodphurs/ boots etc to wear. As i use to compete years ago but am now 21 so presuming that this would change due to my age. If anyone could help i would appreciated it.

Equestrians!(:/is there a place in OH or KY that you can just rent a horse and ride cross country there?
07.February, 2009
I dont have a horse but i know people take their horses at those places and ride cross country, so i was wondering if you could rent a horse there for like a fee or something. my lesson barn doesnt have a cross country course and i HAVE ridden cross country before and i miss ittt.
Have you checked with riding stables local to that area? Usually what I have seen though have been guided trail rides. Good luck.
