I think its more monetary than anything- any person can be very horse smart and know how to ride and properly care for an equine but still not have the money to do so.
If you know how to properly care for an equine and have the money to do so- then I would suggest looking for an equine partner that meets your riding level and is a compatible partner for you.
If you have the money start doing research on how to properly care for an equine. This includes feed, vet care, farrier, tack, grooming supplies, where you will stable or board your horse, and what everyday life is with an equine. Most US house hold that own 1 horse spend an average of $4,000 on their horse a year- this does not include the cost of the horse. Cost may go up or down depending on your area of the country.
If you find a great horse that meets your riding level for lease- go ahead and try it out and determine whether or not your finances are in order to be able to keep a horse long term. Start taking more lessons if you are a beginner or even if you are just a first time horse owner.
Either way, determine if you are ready to take care of an equine before you buy a horse you will not be able to give the proper care for.
How much does it own & care for a horse ?
11.February, 2009
Hi there
Just wondering how much it costs per year to own/keep a horse - on your own land/property (including all food, vaccinations, accessories, care etc) in Victoria, Australia ($AUD) ?
Its just a 'normal' horse, being ridden every day, but not showing, racing, or anything else like that.
Glad if anyone can help….
Rachel
if you want a horse for just pleasure then hay is a good thing to feed so it wont cost very much problem $5 $10 maybe but if u want you horse for something else then other foods would be more expensive
shoes normally cost about $50
vet bills depends really on what your checking and of course what the vet charges
so i;d would roughly say about problem 150/200 a year Maybe depends if anything happens like the horse gets sick and u have to take him/her to the vet again or if a horse loses a shoe or something
how much is it to purchase a horse and then care for it?

my little sister wants a Fell pony. a 4 1/2 foot tall, normally dark colored horse that is good for riding (says the book) now i'm curious, how much would you think it'd cost to purchase this breed? and how much would it cost to feed and care for it over the years? what about a stable? i havent a clue
Ok, so yeah the pony can range from $2000-$10000 depending on the training and if it is registered. You sound like you don't know much so probably more like $5000. Also I would suggest getting a trainer, as you would need to learn how to ride. Per month if you board at a riding stable it could be anywhere from $250 USD- $1000 USD PER MONTH!!!! If you are going to keep it on your own property you have to buy land- $500,000 barn-$50,000, fencing up to $20,000 and then about $200 per month. Make sure you know all aabout horses before you even think about purchasing a horse. Good luck and hope everything works out!
EDIT: horses are very high maintenance and expensive!!
I'm having trouble rembering all the health care and who comes to do what to the horse when you own one. Lol. Please help me!
I agree with the above answers but wanted to add a few things. If you have a gelding - he is going to need his sheath cleaned. Some horses stay clean and only need it once or twice a year. Other horses need it cleaned more frequently. You can do this yourself or have your vet do it.
If you have a mare - if you plan on breeding her you will need to have your vet do a breeding soundness exam (BSE).
Also, equine massage can be considered part of health care.
My horses get - shots & deworming every spring and fall (4-way, west nile, rabies as needed), shoes/trim every 6 weeks, coggins every year, chiropractic as needed, BSE for my mare, sheath cleaned as needed, supplements daily for coat/feet/weight, teeth floated every 6 months to year. Vet for emergencies. Currently, my gelding is on a daily dewormer to kick out whatever is in his system.

Roughly, How much is it to buy, board and take care of a horse yearly?
07.February, 2009
I live west of Fortworth and want to buy a horse for pleasure riding. Roughly, How much is it yearly to board, feed/ take care of a horse yearly????
It all depends on the breed of horse you’re looking to buy. I have a QH gelding and he gets about a handful of grain a day[1 bag of Omolene (#100 for Pleasure horses) goes for about 2-3 months for my 2 horses] he gets a flake of hay a day[a bale costs between $4-$15] depending on the type of hay and where you live. Board at a facility costs anywhere from $100+ depending on how nice it is etc etc. Their once yearly shots cost about $200+ per horse, including Coggins, rabies, rhino virus etc. Wormer costs about $12 a tube [unless you buy it in bulk] and that is given to them normally once a month[some people do it every two months and some do it ever 2 weeks] Having shoes put on them costs about $60+ depending on the ferrier and how much they charge. It’s normally done ever 6-8 weeks. It’s roughly going to be around $1500 a year. Unless you have a very easy keeper. One that doesn’t need shoes, much grain, or hay[due to sufficient grass supply]. Some breeds cost more to care for and some cost less, it just depends on what you want to do with your horse etc.

Can someone please provide me with reliable information on horse (especially arabian) care?
06.February, 2009
I'd like answers from people who actually own horses, or have experience in the field. I need good informational websites, estimates of costs, and anything else you care to provide. Thanks!
I owned an Arabian gelding for 26 years. I always boarded him, never had him in my own yard. I prefer boarding because it let's me be free to travel and besides, if you keep a horse at your own house you really need at least TWO horses — they are herd animals and get very lonely without other horses around.
I live in New England, which is an expensive part of the USA. Full board costs between $350 - $600 per month, depending on the facility and services. Full board usually means that they provide food, stall cleaning and turn out. Some places also provide worming and blanket service — other places charge you more for that. You are responsible to get a farrier (for shoes) and vet for your own horse, although often a vet or farrier will come and see many horses at the same time. You are also responsible for providing any supplements you want your horse to have and for grooming and exercising your horse. SOME stables will exercise and groom your horse for you but those would be MUCH more expensive.
Shoes are VERY expensive — average about $110 every 6 weeks or so. If you live in a place where the horse doesn't need shoes, you might be able to get by with just having the hooves trimmed every 6 weeks, for about $50. But where I live it's so rocky that you NEED shoes — and sometimes pads — if you really want to ride.
You can find all sorts of other types of boarding. Some places charge you much less, but you are responsible for providing feed and hay. Some places charge less but your horse lives outside. Some places charge a LOT less, but all they provide is the stall — you are responsible for getting there twice a day to feed your horse, letting him in or out and cleaning the stall. Personally, I would avoid any place where the owners were responsible for the actual FEEDING. Horses need a routine and owners won't get there at the same time each day. Plus, some owners will come at 5 PM and other won't come until 8 PM — and it upsets horses to see others being fed, even if they've ALREADY eaten. And worst of all, some owners might not come everyday — what do you do then? Let the horse go hungry? Or feed him yourself?
Turnout is another factor you need to consider. I think it's VERY cruel to keep a horse inside all the time. They NEED to go out for exercise, companionship and foraging. Land is so expensive these days that it's rare to find actual PASTURE, but at least the horse should be in a large paddock where he can at least PRETEND to be foraging for grass. And of course he will need plenty of hay.
What kind of riding do you want to do? If you want to show, then you probably need a place with an indoor arena, unless you live where the weather is almost always nice. If you just want to ride on trails — then you'll need to find a barn with acess to trails. Remember, the better the facility, the more you will pay.
I really don't know of any good web sites, but I'm sure you can find some. Good luck — and I hope you find the horse of your dreams!
I just bought a my first horse. How do i take care of it?
05.February, 2009
Okay, I just bought my first horse and know nothing about it! It is a palimeno and she is very sweet. I named her Berry because she a spot that looks like a berry. I got her a month ago and I have been riding her and she is great! But neither my parents or I know what to do about taking care of her. I only fell of of her once. But other than that I love her. Is there any care tip books on how to take care of a horse? Can somebody please help me!!
There are several books available at the library for free. You should read several of them and create a notebook of the best information for yourself to refer back to. First talk to an equine vet and get all your health care set up. you will need to worm regularly and keep up shots. Fly and bug care is important. You will need a farrier and set up a foot care schedule. Let each of them tell you if your horse has special additional needs, such as hoofs that need extra oils. Feed your horse 2xs a day. Always keep fresh water available at all times. Horses need some sort of shelter to get out of the sun, rains, ect. When going to go riding, always clean her hoofs and brush her back before tacking up. this will prevent injuries from stones. Saddle sores can create an angry horse. Then when riding start slow. She needs to warm up before running. After each ride always cool her with a walk, wipe her down or wash off and dry her wet spot, never put her up wet and hot or cold. This will make her ill. Get her grain for the winter and a salt block. Horses need love and respect and will return that to you. There is a life time of information to learn keep researching and learning for your horses health. Good start by seeking help. You will be a great horse owner.

Grooming Kit -

Tack & Equipment -

Boots or Polo Wraps if your horse needs them
Bat or Spurs depending if your horse needs them
(other riding aids if your horse needs them)

You'll need somewhere to turn your horse out at for exersize and graze such as a padock, should be atleast one acre.
Other -
Fly Repelant (I use equi spot & FlyPel spray)
Sun Screan (if needed)
Hoof Ointment
Horse Shampoo
If your horse has a long tail that drags the ground such as morgans & arabians, you'll need supplies to wrap it with.
You might want to buy Infusium hair conditioner and use it on your horses mane and tail. We do with our horses.
If your horse is kept out on pasture you'll need just about all of the above, only you need to make sure he has access to a suitable shelter at all times.
I think I covered the basics, I might have forgotten something though.
