What are the diffrences between hunter, equitation, & show jumping?
12.February, 2009
Okay, I am a little confuzed on which is which…I think Jumper is the fasters paced [normally] more high strung horses. Hunter is the natural looking jumps with the slower more relaxed horses. Equitation is the same as Hunter with majority of the juding focused on your position?
PLEASE PLEASE, tell me which is which so I can know what activity I would rather lean into…thanks.
Hunter is judged more on the horse.
Equitation is judged on the rider's position
Jumper is timed. Horse and rider are not judged. If the horse knocks down a rail a time penalty is added and the fastest time wins.
What was the height of the 2008 Equestrian Olympic Show jumping?
11.February, 2009
wait i am asking about the Show jumping not the Cross Country, Cause when i was watching the show jumping it said that the highest jump was 3'9 for a team and 4'1 for individual. And i wasnt sure if i heard it right that is why i was asking.
umm she wants to know the height of the jumps not your opinion of the event. the jumps are usually between 4′10 and 5 feet high. the water jumps are shorter but can be as wide as 7 1/2 feet
At what age do kids usually switch from show jumping ponies to horses?
10.February, 2009
Hi, Just looking for information for a story I'm writing. Any help would be great!
Usually the saying goes — "Jods (Jodhpurs) for a child's pony, boots for a man's horse"
When horses were an integral part of everyday society children were not allowed to ride horses outside of the private home until they became men (let's do recall that in polite society women rode in carriages). Perhaps my family just made this adage up but its been the rule of thumb!
Now in the modern age its size based. I wouldn't say skill based because ponies can be equally naughty and difficult. My mother being 5' and around 100 lbs would befit a pony while I at 5'9" and an undisclosed weight prefer a 16-17.2hh for riding and 15-15.3hh for polo.
What is the BIGGEST competition in show jumping in the world?
09.February, 2009
also, is there any horse competion in the olympics?
When will i be able to see show jumping in the next olympics? 2010?
Most people would say the Olympic Games, but I don't agree with that. I believe that in terms of size and the number of nations which compete, either the World Cup or the World Equestrian Games are larger, depending on one's point of view. Yes, there are equestrian events in the Olympics- the 3 standard disciplines are dressage, the 3-day event, and show jumping. Horse sports have been part of the Games since 1912- 2008 will be their 96th year in the Games, in fact. The ancient Olympics also included horse sports- in their case, those sports were horse races, chariot races, and what was called the Militare, which was the forerunner of the modern 3 day event.
The next Olympics which will have show jumping is next summer in Hong Kong ( the equestrian portion of the Games will be run there, and not in Bejing, because Hong Kong has the necessary facilities and Bejing does not) and show jumping will also be a part of the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY in 2010.
That answer your questions?
How would one go about show jumping in the Olympics and/or World Equestrian Games?

I need details as specific as you can get. This is a huge dream of mine and I want a chance at catching it. Thank you!
You have to make the team representing your country.
How do I get my horse to jump upright show jumping fences, without knocking through them, spreads are no prob?
07.February, 2009
I have a 17hh TB, who I purchased a year ago from a a lady who rehabilitates, ex-eventers & racehorses. His past is shady and unknown before she had him. He has very straight shoulders, but clears 3'9" XC country without any fuss and his dressage is impeccable, we are hoping to go BE next year, but we really need to tackle the SJ side of things as he clears 3'9" spreads perfectly, but also adds an additional stride into upright straight bars and sometimes crashes through them.
It could very well be that he is not rocked back onto his hindquarters enough. Horses will sometimes begin to get quick and therefore flatten out their jump and knock rails down if you don't rock them back onto their hindquarters to get the power from behind to clear the jump. I would start practicing 2'9-3' jumps rocking him back - collecting him up and really getting that power from behind and slowly working your way back up to 3'9. It can actually begin when you are flatting him practising collections and extensions and really work on getting a "rocking canter" (aka power from the hindquarters) instead of letting him do it from the forehand. As for attacking skinnies, make sure your horse is packaged up even more - because those jumps are so narrow, it's easy for your horse to flatten out even more over them. You don't need a good gallop or extended canter in order to clear a jump - this is when they get onto the forehand and knock down rails. You need a nice even working canter with the power coming from behind instead of infront.
You can also practice with groundlines to help the horse see the distance to the fence. Certain coloured poles make it difficult for horses to actually get a good "look" at the fence and/or make it very difficult for the horse to judge the jump itself. When you take groundlines away, it becomes more difficult for the horse to judge exactly where the jump is and the distance to it.
Olympic or professional show jumping horse breeds?
06.February, 2009
I know that a lot of olympic or top show jumping horses are hanoverian, trakhener, or warmblood, ect. But is it possible to make it to “big times” with just a thoroughbred? what about quarter horse? I know that it is awful high hopes to want to make it that far, but its an inevitable dream of mine ![]()
Yes, it IS possible for ANY talented horse of any breed to make it to the big time.
Movement, temperment, conformation, training, talent and HEART all play an important role in how successful any horse becomes in any given discipline.
Taller horses would have some advantage over a smaller one when attempting very high jumps, but I have seen small Arabians with LOTS of HEART jump higher, faster, and wider. Doesn’t seen possible somehow, does it?
where can i find the complete rules for Table A4 in show jumping?
05.February, 2009
every time i do search on internet - it doesnt actually give me the rules, just extracts from other show schedules.
The BSJA should certainly be able to help you out.
How can i get my horse to pick her back feet up whrn show jumping?
04.February, 2009
I have a great horse who jumps well over 1.20m bt often drags her back feet when jumping and sometimes knocks them down with her back feet, is there any excercise that i could do to get her to pick her back feet up when jumpin?
You need to get her moving forward a bit more– it sounds like you are a good rider but may want to carry a crop just so she is a bit more motivated. Sometimes riders even use the crop just a tiny tap on takeoff which really helps, if you want, you can jsut use this during practice and see if it pays off in competition. Also, when you are practicing at home you should also try setting up a lot of oxer and fan jumps, this will teach her to jump farther and longer, and when they do that they have to pick up their feet– make sure that you have placement poles when you jump to practice with too.. Is it possible that she is taking off too soon or too late? Which is causing this? Placement poles will tell them when they should take off, which should also help with her little problem :]
Best of luck this year in the show season!
What exercises are best for improving my show jumping position.?
03.February, 2009
I have just started jumping again after about 20 years of not jumping. Im finding it very hard to stay in the jumping position at trot or canter, as I will be taking my stage 2 BHS exams I need to perfect this ASAP
Does anyone have any tips or exercises on or off the ground which might help.
trot at two point, and stand on stairs or a curb with your heals off the edge, and go up and down for your calf muscles. for your thighs ride your bike a lot. (that’s what i do)
